Square Dancing In A Round House 2.0

the place where I show off with my impeccable tastes in music. It's all about boosting up my geeky little ego, seen? ;-)

On occasion I'll also post a nifty little compilation or just a the odd tracks from artists I'm gushing about at the moment. Some of the music here comes from my own cd and record collection, some of it I grabbed on the net. So thanks a ton to all the original uploaders!

Due to the fact that a massive amount of playlists has been deleted, full albums will only be available to my contacts. The tags should give you an idea of the general direction of this site. If you want to be added to my contacts, just send me a request. Adding a few nice, funny or cheeky words to your request is highly appreciated :-)

From Cameroon to Ethiopia

We're moving further down south, from Cameroon (Francis Bebey) to the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kéjélé and Grand Maitre Luambo-Franco et Tabu Ley Rochereau) and to Zimbabwe (The Green Arrows), until we reach South Africa (Manhattan Brothers, The Soul Brothers). From there we're travelling up north again, first stopping by on the Comoros (Sambeco, Zainaba), then going to Kenya (Orchestra Super Mazembe, Kenge Kenge) and finally arriving at the final destination of our musical journey -

From Cape Verde to Nigeria

Part one of a musical journey from Africa's east coast to the west coast via South Africa. It starts in Cape Verde, with its graceful, Portuguese and Brazilian influenced music, and leads us to the mbalanx sound of Gambia and Senegal, to Sierra Leone and Gerald Pino's Afro-Soul, to Mali, where we encounter the desert blues of N'Gou Bagayoko and Ali Farka Touré, and finally to Nigeria and the funky Afrobeat of The Sahara All Stars and Orlando Julius.

The tracks come from various sources (not least the wonderful site Benn loxo du taccu) and some were ripped from rare cassette tapes and vinyl LPs, so bit rates and sound quality vary.

As an arranger, composer and keyboarder for Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis and his own group Weather Report he was instrumental in shaping both the smooth sound of Soul-Jazz and the spaced-out, sombre electronic fusion of the early seventies. Yesterday, Joe Zawinul, the great pioneer of electronic keyboards in jazz, passed away from skin cancer in his native city Vienna.

His first solo album Zawinul - recorded in 1970 with luminaries like Herbie Hancock, Woody Shaw and Jack DeJohnette - includes his own take on what is not only one of his most popular compositions, but probably also his most important one. RIP, Joe.

Lots of Einstürzende Neubauten related projects in this third installment of German post-punk compilations. First, there's two tracks from Mona Mur & Die Mieter's 1982 EP Jeszcze Polska: dark, expressionist and angular proto-goth, somewhere between Malaria!, X-Mal Deutschland and early Siouxsie. Die Mieter were Neubauten members Alex Hacke, Marc Chung and F.M. Einheit plus one Gode B. Although the band broke up after their only EP, Einheit and Hacke continued performing and recording sporadically with singer Mona Mur until the mid eighties.

Then, there's Süchtig (Health Dub), the dub version of Christiane F.'s Wunderbar, with both Hacke and Einheit credited as producers, musicians and co-composers. More leftfield disco that wouldn't sound out of place on Zé Records' Mutant Disco compilation. If you liked the original (find it here), you'll quite probably adore this remix too.

And finally Alexander Hacke features with a track from his solo EP Hiroshima, released under the alia...

Just a bunch of tracks that came out in, well, I think you already guessed it. It's not intended as a sort of overview of that year's musical output by any means, so no Beatles, Stones, Dylan, CCR, Led Zep, Velvets, Aretha, Marvin or Tim Buckley. In fact, I just needed a theme for a playlist and figured that "1969" is as good as any. I think it turned out quite nicely and I'm especially pleased with the less obvious choices in there. So, hope you enjoy!

Option 30 were an early eighties synthpop/new wave combo and Reznor was their leadsinger and keyboardist before he turned into the Lord of Darkness. The vocals on this version are actually a bit embarrassing, methinks
